Summer Hockey Comes to an End

Was the program a success?

Last night, July 30th, wrapped up our final summer hockey practice of the season.  Our participants ranged in age from 4 year old Jacob Detavis to our senior goalie Angel Cruz.  The program overall was a success as we saw improvements from our players in stick handling, skating, hockey concepts, hockey knowledge (traditional and game), and scoring acumen.  Our players cumulatively put in an additional 273 practices this summer with participation from 27 different players.  Wyatt Walker (upcoming mite) was the only player with perfect attendance, attending and participating in all 26 practices.  At the end of practice last night, our kids did a victory lap around the slab with the "Stanley Cup" we made for the Fiestas de Taos Parade.

Our summer schedule was rigorous, with 3 practices a week, for a total of 4 hours a week.  We did mix it up though, we had family time on Sunday's after practice where we would cook-out, have a picnic, host a birthday party, and some water balloons were even involved.  We did try to freeze some balloons to use as pucks but the summer heat killed those quicker than our slap-shots could.   All in all, our kids had a blast, the coaches had a blast, and our program as a whole is better off for doing this.

A special thank you to Coach Todd Gravelle who coached over 95% of the practices and took the little guys under his wing.  Other coaches jumped in and helped out and we'd like to thank them as well.  John Wilson, Sr and Jr., Brian Greer, Charlie Raskovics, Mark Richert and Kyle McMullin.

31 days and counting until registration opens for ice hockey!  See you then!
